This is another track that went through a lot of changes… and for the best. I’ve always been a big fan of “riffs”. It can be a guitar riff, a bass riff or a keyboard riff. Even drums can have some kind of riff - we usually call it a signature.
“No Tomorrow” is the perfect example of a great riff in my opinion. It was written in 1998 with my fellow band mates. I can clearly remember where my influence came from: Radiohead on OK Computer (1997) with the song Electioneering. The guitar pattern that Johnny Greenwood and Ed O’Brien (two of my favourite guitar players) wrote is so unique and powerful on this track that right after I heard it in 1997 I said to myself that I had to write something as good as that riff. I’m not pretentious and I can’t say it’s better, but personally I think it’s my greatest riff ever because of its originality, the weird chord progression (Gm - “Bm” – Em), which is very awkward, and the timing.
The original version of this track was called “From One To Another” and was on our first “unreleased” album Radiowave Transmission, back when we were called Moonraker.
This version had great potential but subconsciously I never wanted to rework the song because Mat never liked it. But somewhere inside of me I knew it had something great.
Almost 10 years later, I brought the song back to life while we were in studio. It is probably one of the darkest songs on the record because of the chord progression and the way Mat sings. The ghost of Ian Curtis was for sure in the room when he sang it. I remember putting a lot of effort into this track to show what was going on in my life during that period. You see, it’s easy to write a "sad" song. Just play a few minor chords and try to sound desperate. The thing is to bring it to life you need more. You need to put in colors, emotions, textures and most importantly, passion.
If you play it acoustic, the song itself is dark but I wanted to explore a new territory which was darkness, I mean extreme darkness…
I’m a big fan of Gary Numan, one of the first electronic musicians in the business. His album “The Pleasure Principle” was a complete revelation for me. It’s pop and dancy but so dark. This album could be the soundtrack of a horror movie. This is where I wanted to bring “No Tomorrow”, into this dark environment.
Therefore, I mixed different keyboard sounds together (again my super Yamaha DX-7) with dark guitar tones (again my Gretsch through my Electro-Harmonix Memory Man echo unit). The result was fantastic but even more unique were all these weird guitar/keyboard melodies going through these different chord changes.
On the other hand, the song comes back to normal the moment we hear the chorus - nothing fancy, but effective. It leaves all this room for the vocal melody.
Another great moment in this song is the bridge. It has this great shuffle groove, with amazing rhythm from Pierre and Dom. I came up with a great guitar sound for the bridge that I took from "Money" by Pink Floyd. It is a fast tremolo effect with a long sustain… again, simple, but so nice to hear.
To conclude, this song is one of my favorite moments on the album. Some say it should be a single, others think it’s too dark to be on the radio. I would love to take the risk and release it because what I hear on the radio is always so “the same” and I’m getting sick of it. I know for sure it couldn’t become the biggest song on the radio, but you know, sometimes it’s good to hear something different. “No Tomorrow” has the necessary hooks, a great guitar riff, an amazing shuffle groove, great vocal melodies and trust me, the singer is a real ghost on this one. The spirits were in the room.
